A New Generation of Wireless Technology

WiMAX (IEEE Standard 802.16) is not to be confused with the first-generation WiFi technology (802.11x) that you may already have in your home or workplace. WiMAX offers the following benefits over WiFi:

 — it is more secure (dual-layer security as standard)
 — it offers much longer range (up to 30 miles)
 — it offers much more robust quality of service (QoS)
 — it is simpler to install, configure, and maintain
 — it offers higher bandwidth (72 Mbps)

Intel is the principal backer of WiMAX technology, though dozens of high-profile technology industry leaders are involved in its development. Intel's WiMAX center offers an excellent introduction to the key concepts of WiMAX. The industry initiative the WiMAX Forum also offers a wealth of introductory and advanced information on the WiMAX standard and the implementation of WiMAX networks, as well as the many advantages of the technology over the alternatives. Nortel, a key backer, also offers a decent WiMAX Solutions overview.
